Sustainability to be put at the fore front of the hospitality industry?s activities

The trade association of hotels, restaurants and cafes in the European Union, HOTREC, put sustainability at the fore font of its activities, with the adoption by its General Assembly of a working paper on sustainability in the hospitality sector. ?The adoption of this paper by the representatives of the hospitality industry in Europe shows the commitment of HOTREC to sustainability. HOTREC fully agrees with the need to promote sustainable, responsible and high quality tourism?, Ms. Susanne Kraus-Winkler, Vice-President of HOTREC and Chair of its Task Force on Sustainability, commented.
With the adoption of this working paper, HOTREC takes full position on sustainability and fully engages to promote, amongst its member associations, the preservation of the economic sustainability of the tourism industry, the preservation and protection of the environment, as well as the respect of the socio-cultural authenticity of host communities and regions. To facilitate the shift of practices within the hospitality sector and to achieve sustainability, HOTREC asks the European institutions to assist the industry with real incentives, especially financial.
HOTREC member associations commit to work along a series of policy line actions, such as the promotion of the numerous existing best practices throughout Europe; the promotion of the regional agricultural products and the enhancement of the relation between tourism, local agriculture and culture; the use of energy efficiency products and renewable energy sources; etc.
Finally, HOTREC also calls on the European policy makers to consult and involve the hospitality industry in all European Union policies and legislative initiatives related to sustainability, to ensure that the specific needs of the industry are duly taken into account.
The working paper on sustainability in the hospitality sector is freely available to any interested party on the HOTREC website.
