Berlin airport opening delayed until summer

Planned opening of Berlin's Willy Brandt airport postponed until August because of fire safety checksThe planned opening of Berlin's new airport next month has been delayed because of fire safety concerns, according to German officials.The airport operator's managing director, Rainer Schwarz, told reporters on Tuesday that further safety checks on the terminal buildings were necessary in case of a fire.Mayor Klaus Wowereit said it was hoped the Willy Brandt airport would open in August.It was due to open on 3 June to replace Berlin's ageing Tegel and Sch�nefeld airports, concluding another chapter in the reunification of the formerly divided city.Matthias Platzeck, the governor of neighbouring Brandenburg state, said he was "really angry" and promised a full investigation into the cause of the delay.GermanyAir transportEuropeAirline industryguardian.co.uk © 2012 Guardian News and Media Limited or its affiliated companies.
