As super photographer Jon Whittle put the finishing touches on the new ISLANDS Wish List: Find the Secret America, he shared one of his greatest moments on these South Pacific islands, which focused on the creature you see in this photo. Sorry, Jon, if I'm not doing this justice, but there he was, under a pitch-black night sky in the middle of the ocean, the light from the stars so bright that it lit up the island as strong as moonlight. He looked up and saw the constellation Scorpio and the big, bold, beautiful Milky Way. And then a dark shadow seemed to blot out the stars. Then another one, and another one.
Jon realized that the island's flying foxes -- yes, flying foxes -- were soaring across the sky. He knew he was going to have to get a picture of them once it was daylight. Hearing him tell the story, I knew I had to get him on video for all of you. Next time. Jon is heading on another South Pacific adventure very soon.
