The peninsular tip of Senegal points like an arrow 385 miles into the heart of Cape Verde. A former Portuguese colony and once hub of the slave trade, the country shows its roots in music, food and the Crioulo blend of Portuguese and West African languages. Tuesdays and Fridays, fly Cabo Verde Airlines nonstop from Boston (BOS) to Praia (RAI) on the island of Santiago (or con- nect daily through Lisbon). Short flights from Praia (the name translates to "beach") access the volcano island of Fogo, Sal with its surf breaks and Santo Ant�o, where they brew the traditional unaged cane liquor called grogue. Wherever you land, pull up a patch of sand and order punch, made from grogue, sugar & lime, similar to a Brazilian caipirinha, potentially lethal but delicious.
