Mountainfilm in Telluride

Mountainfilm, which started in Telluride in 1979, is on of the longest standing film festivals in the country. Since the '70s, it?s become a platform for some truly badass action sports, environmental, and cultural films. Yes, I said badass environmental films. Here are this year's skiing flicks, as well as some eye opening surf, skate, and bike films.  Berber Turns: Dave Mossop, of the Rocky Mountain Sherpas shot skiers, like Telluride local Kim Havell, making turns on the high peaks of Morocco. There?s no teaser, but given Mossop?s propensity for getting creative shots, Havell?s shred skills and the backdrop of Marrakesh, I?m going to bet that it?s going to be good.   Desert River: A look at late season skiing in Haines, Alaska, from Sweetgrass Productions. Fall Line Heath Calhoun, who lost both of his legs in Iraq went from losing evry race he entered to becoming a Paralympics contender. The film won most inspiring story at the Five Points film festival.  Dark Side of the Lens A truly beautiful look at soul surfing on the coast of Ireland.  Life Cycles: This is a movie about a bike.   Skateistan: Directed by former professional snowboarder Orlando von Einsiedel, Skateistan looks at skater groms are changing the landscape of Kabul. If you can?t make it to T-ride this weekend, Mountainfilm is going on tour, and it?ll be traveling as far as New York.

Summer arts calendar: Sheffield

The Arctic Monkeys' much-awaited homecoming gigs might have sold out, but there's loads of other great stuff going on in Sheffield this summer, says Lucy Harper of The Culture Vulture Sheffield's top 10 budget places to eat10 top music venues in SheffieldPeace in the Park Festival 2011, 4 JuneThis independent community arts and music festival offers seven stages of music, from a DJ tent powered by local lads Sequoia Sound System, to acoustic sets by the super-cool Red House pub, and a pedal-powered sound system. Don't miss live graffiti art, a pop-up cinema and a Guinness World Records attempt for the most number of children being read a story. You'll find heaps of craft, a vintage tea tent and a local ale bar. Started in 2003 as a protest against the Iraq war, it's a charity fundraiser with a relaxed atmosphere.? Free, noon-8pm, the Ponderosa, Netherthorpe, peaceinthepark.org.ukWortley Hall Walk and Dine, 6 June-12 SeptemberOn a warm summer's evening, head to Wortley Hall in north Sheffield for a guided walk round the Grade II-listed Italianate gardens, followed by a slap-up three-course dinner. Discover the history of the garden, woodlands and the unusual heritage of the hall. It is affordable fine dining in a sumptuous setting with much of the produce coming from the hall's kitchen gardens which are cultivated by Sheffield's own urban farm, Heeley City. It's part of a great calendar of summer events at the hall including open-air theatre and the South Yorkshire Family Festival. Bring sturdy footwear.? 20, Starts at 5.45pm (dinner 7.30pm), 6 and 20 June, 11 and 25 July, 8 and 22 August, 12 September, wortleyhall.org.ukSheffield Doc/Fest, 8-12 JuneCleverly promoted as Sex & Docs & Rock'n'Roll, this is developing into one of the best documentary film festivals in the UK. Look out for music docs featuring Queen, Tribe Called Quest, Justin Bleiber (in 3D), Jarvis Cocker and Miriam Makeba. Our War, Just Do It and Condition One address politics; Senna is the story of Brazilan Formula One champion Aryton Senna; Jig deals with Irish dancing; and Seven Dwarves is about seven dwarves who star in panto with Snow White. Werner Herzog's Oscar-nominated Encounters at the End of the World is a must-see, shown outside on the grass of Devonshire Green at 1pm on 11 June.? Various prices and venues, sheffdocfest.comSheffield's Children's Festival, 11 June-10 JulyA perennial favourite for the children of the city. This year the Crucible theatre is offering magical tours of the back rooms of the venue; local classical Ensemble 360 are taking part in numerous events; Sheffield children have made glowing, underwater sculptures for the Winter Gardens; download details of a city centre adventure trail on your smartphone; and a series of school shows include Midsummer Night's Dream and Billy Elliot the Musical. Many of the events are free, and there are lots of opportunities for children to take part by making or doing something.? Various prices and venues, sheffieldchildrensfestival.orgCliff Hanger, Millhouses Park, 2-3 JulyDefinitely the edgiest event of this round-up, Cliff Hanger is a massive event for outdoor fanatics. Ordinary folk get the chance to try rock climbing, mountain biking, skate boarding, adventure racing, running and orienteering next to elite competitions and professional demos. If you've ever been to Stanage Edge, a climbers' haven and the city's doorstep to the Peak District, you'll know why Sheffield is the obvious choice for this particular cliff hanger.? Mostly free, various venues, cliff-hanger.co.ukSheffield Food Festival, 4-10 July 2011"Taste something new" is the invitation and theme of this year's festival. You can certainly try something new in the festival producers market, with the launch of a Sheffield Food Showcase where all the artisan foods are 100% produced in the city. Among the feast of other events, lookout for a city centre farm and an Eat the World area in the Peace Gardens with pop-up restaurants and a festival picnic. Other attractions include chef demos, ale trails and cookery classrooms. There'll also be offers, themed menus and tastings in restaurants, cafes and bars.? Mostly free, various venues, sheffieldfoodfestival.comKid Acne: Kill Your Darlings, Millennium Gallery, 21 July-23 OctoberUrban artist Kid Acne is hosting his first solo exhibition in his home city and word on the street is he's created new works especially for the show. His graffiti murals spring up everywhere from Sheffield's Parkhill Flats to Azerbaijan. Some of his most iconic illustrations, sculpture and a live-action short film will mark the journey of his career. There are some great opportunities to meet the star of the show at a Museums Late evening event to kick start Tramlines on 22 July (see below), or at a printmaking master class (28 August). Expect subversion, wit and mystery.? Exhibition and lunchtime talk (18 August) free, printmaking master class 22.50-25, museums-sheffield.org.ukTramlines Music Festival, 22-24 JulyFor one weekend a year the entire city centre turns into a huge music festival. Imagine the Edinburgh Fringe, only all music rather than theatre. Thanks to the support of the council most of the gigs are free and every pub and music venue has live bands and a number of public spaces host outdoor stages. You can wander from venue to venue, although the most popular spots have queues. Expect a rootsy vibe full of up-and-comers plus the likes of Ash, Toddla T, Futureheads and Rolo Tomassi at the top.? Mostly free, various venues, tramlines.org.ukThe Froggatt Show, 27 AugustNear the city centre, and actually in Derbyshire, this tiny Peaks village plays host to a quintessential country fair. English countryside doesn't get much more scenic than this, with riverside pastures, National Trust woodland and a lofty grit-stone edge. As well as choirs, brass bands and craft stalls, there's a hotly fought competition for the best produce, flowers and vegetables, plus an abundance of brightly-coloured, classic tractors.? More info to come at derbyshireuk.net/froggatt.htmlArt in the Gardens, 3-4 SeptemberSheffield Botanical Gardens is one of the most picturesque outdoor venues in the city centre and during the summer you're spoilt for choice when it comes to art, music and theatre events, both in the gardens and the Victorian greenhouses. The summer calendar culminates with Art in the Gardens, the largest outdoor art exhibition in the north of England, with a wealth of UK artists and craft makers. It's a great opportunity to pick up a piece direct from the artists.? Children free, adults 5, sbg.org.uk?
