Skiwatch: New snow offers superb skiing in the Alps

Fresh snowfall in the Alps means that conditions have continued to improve in most areas, despite occasionally poor visibility in the falling snow. French resorts have had moderate amounts of new snow, Italy and Switzerland slightly more. Best in Europe this week is Austria, particularly on the glaciers. In Austria, Kaprun (80cm-220cm) and Zell-am-Ziller (20cm-80cm) had 30cm-40cm of new snow, while the fall in Slden (10cm-242cm) prompted the Ski Club of Great Britain to describe the skiing as 'superb'. A 100cm dump of new snow in French Cauterets (30cm-190cm) closed the resort on Wednesday because of avalanche danger. Meribel (32cm-92cm) and Alpe D'Huez (69cm-195cm) have improved with a 4cm-5cm dusting.Swiss Zermatt (5cm-125cm) and Wengen (10cm-95cm) improved dramatically, while off-piste in Verbier (13cm-145cm) should be ideal when snowfall stops. Italian Courmayeur (55cm-110cm) and Cervinia (50-180cm) continue to impress despite some wind-related lift closures. There will be a mixture of sun and snowfall in the Alps over the weekend and into next week, with low temperatures assisting snow retention. The best of the new snow will be in western Austria. Some French resorts will receive 30cm. Both Switzerland and Italy will see continued snowfall, some of it heavy. In the US, resorts in Colorado and California expect substantial amounts of new snow, as do resorts in the east, where it will be -23C.SkiingStephen Leeguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
