Flights to US resume after Hurricane Irene

Airports reopened for flights and British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have added services to New York where flights to both JFK and Newark were shut down on Saturday and Sunday because of Hurricane Irene.Nevertheless, passengers that are�stranded in the US are warned that it may take several days to clear the backlog.The death toll has reached 44 people as it hit the east coast�yet it�did not cause as much damage as feared when it passed through New York and other east coast cities.BA said in a statement: ?British Airways expects to fly a full schedule to and from US cities today. However we would urge you to check the status of your flight before travelling to the airport.?We have introduced a flexible booking policy for customers flying to and from Boston, New York (JFK and Newark), Philadelphia, Washington DC and Baltimore up to August 30 and whose flight has not been cancelled.?Virgin Atlantic said: ?We are focusing all our energy on a recovery plan to bring people back home. Because flights are already very full it will be a little while before everybody is accommodated.?We have arranged additional flights however if you have already been rebooked on a flight due to leave up to and including Thursday, September 1, please do not call us. We will not be able to bring you home any sooner so please check in for your new flight as usual.?�

Access to Liberty Island and views will not be affected while work is carried out on interior of New York landmark to make it saferThe Statue of Liberty will close for a year at the end of October as it undergoes a $27.25m (�16.8m) renovation that will make the interior safer and more accessible, US interior secretary Ken Salazar said.The renovations are limited to the monument, and Liberty Island will remain open and the statue itself will be mostly unobstructed from view, officials said.Tegan Firth, a spokeswoman for Statue Cruises, which on an average Saturday during the summer ferries about 18,000 people to Liberty Island, said the renovation will not have a significant impact on visit numbers."The entire experience of visiting these national landmarks of the United States remains absolutely the same," she said.The National Parks Service, which manages the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island, said it will close the monument on 28 October after the 125th anniversary of its dedication.It will be closed the following day, and workers from Joseph Construction, a New Jersey company, will install improved stairways and upgrade electrical and fire suppression systems, elevators and bathrooms.The National Parks Service said in August 2010 that it would close the statue's crown to upgrade the stairwells and improve safety at Lady Liberty. One reason for it was that the newest fire codes mandate escape routes that would allow the statue to be evacuated within two hours, not possible on the current staircases on either side of the pedestal.The statue was closed after the 11 September terror attacks for security precautions, but the base reopened in 2004 after a $20m security upgrade. The observation deck at the top of the crown was reopened on 4 July 2009.The National Parks Service controls the number of visitors to the crown, saying around 240 people visit each day. Megabus to launch sleeper service

Stagecoach's budget service will offer passenger berths on overnight coach journeys between London and GlasgowThink of travelling by sleeper and you probably imagine a steam train chugging through the countryside, lulling you to sleep in your private oak-panelled haven, rather than nodding off on a coach on the M1. But that could change after September, when Megabus launches the UK's first budget sleeper coach service.From 5 September Megabus will offer passengers their own berths on an overnight service between London and Glasgow. Each of the berths, which are laid out in sets of three with just a curtain for privacy, will be kitted out with a reading light, duvet, pillow and blanket.The company, which launched nationally in 2004 as a budget alternative to National Express, will operate the service on three specially refurbished coaches, each fitted with 24 berths and seats.Although Megabus operates at the no-frills end of the travel market, passengers on the sleepers will receive a free overnight pack containing a toothbrush, toothpaste and an eye mask, so they can freshen up before they reach their destination.Coaches will run seven nights a week in both directions, leaving Glasgow at 23:15 and arriving in London at 07:20, and departing from London at 23.59 and arriving in Glasgow at 8:05.Sir Brian Souter, the chief executive of Megabus's parent company Stagecoach, said there had already been growing demand for its overnight services."We believe the best way to find out if it's a service our customers want is by offering them the chance to try it out for real."Travelling direct from city centre to city centre beats the hassle of a red-eye flight from an airport and is a greener, smarter way to travel."The company will be running passenger trials of the sleeper service during August before the first scheduled services go live.It may lack some of the romance of catching the train, but tickets for the service start at �1, plus booking fee, and go up to �40, while ScotRail's sleeper service starts at �19.Saving moneyConsumer affairsCoach travelStagecoachRoad transportTravel & leisureScotlandHilary Osborneguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2011 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
